Ivar Veermäe (FOKU)

Ivar Veermäe (EE/DE, b. 1982) works in Tallinn and Berlin. He is an artist whose works evolve through careful study, conducting first-hand research or gathering insights from discussions with others – those connected to a place or subject in question. Veermäe combines video, photography and sound recordings with 3D animations into a mixture of documentary, staged and computer generated imagery. Often, he presents his results as multi-channel spatial installations. Environmental theory, climate literature, technology criticism, behavioural science and fiction provide a theoretical foundation for his projects.

Created with an electron microscope (SEM), Territory I – IV is based on close-up views of the sun, transformed through an experimental biological process. Part of a larger series of works – A Little Less Blue Skies, A Little More Red Sunsets – this chapter focuses on the complexity of biological and geological relationships.

Meanwhile, Multiple Centuries of Sunlight consists of several mirror-polished stainless steel plates that are engraved by hand. The engravings show various diagrams, illustrations and graphs from geoengineering research, which represent hypothetical ideas for human intervention in the entire planetary climate system. Like Territory I – IV, these works also belong to the broader series, A Little Less Blue Skies, A Little More Red Sunsets.
