Joosep Kivimäe (FOKU)

Joosep Kivimäe (EE, b. 1994) is a Tallinn-based visual artist and photographer, who graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2022. In his work, he explores the structures characteristic of consumer society, focusing on the relationship between humans and technology and its effects on both the individual and geopolitical level. His work also intertwines topics related to the environment, public space, and consumption habits, examining them more closely through the aspects such as advertising, traditions, and collectivity. Kivimäe’s works have been exhibited in duo- and group show formats in Estonia, The Netherlands and Germany.

To Be Decided observes the interior of a modernist office building in a state of uncertainty; Kivimäe brings the intimacy of skin to the site’s nostalgic interiors, connecting the past with new presence – and highlighting an overall sense of suspense.

Meanwhile, Wafer #1 (ASML Global HQ) depicts a Dutch corporation that specialises in manufacturing photolithography machines, which are used to produce computer chips. Despite its unfathomable complexity, the principles of photolithography are very similar to that of photography. The world’s dependency on computer chips has given ASML an enormous position of power, influencing the production chains of everything from daily commodities to rocket technologies.
