Justin Keene (Galerie Number 8)

Justin Keene (GB/ZA, b. 1989) is a documentary photographer based between London and South Africa. He holds an MA in Philosophy from The University of Edinburgh and is currently following a Documentary Photography Master’s programme at the University of South Wales. Keene’s personal work explores concepts of identity and representation in South Africa, reviewing the ethics of photographic practice and its implications for contemporary art.

His projects Being for the Other and It Must Be Built From Ashes construct narratives that reflect on South Africa as a postcolony – exploring past and present effects on social and physical landscapes in the country. As part of a research-based practice, Keene’s new work looks at the importance of the family archive for interpreting visual media in contemporary contexts – exploring personal relationships with South African colonial histories.
