Kristīne Krauze Slucka (ISSP Gallery)

Kristīne Krauze Slucka (LV, b. 1979) is a Latvian artist who focuses on the investigation of industrially-produced materials as a starting point for pseudo-social anthropological findings. She acts like a hunter-gatherer, learning about the world order through observation, chance and association. Slucka creates objects, installations and works with photographically-conditioned renderings, preserving methods of creating experimental tactile images.

Vibrations of the material universe. Thirst for gold.

“Gold is an extension of human happiness, as are everyday images. But every coin has two sides – and so does every image. This project attempts to visualise an invisible threat to the biosphere, brought on by analogue photographic image-making. Creating a layer of water on light-sensitive photographic paper, then carefully applying chemicals, the resulting images reveal the aesthetics of hand-made pollution: where a watery blue becomes golden. It’s a creative gesture that recognises water as a universal solvent, a source of life and transformation, as well as a collector of chemical waste.”

Solastalgia

“Coined by Australian environmental researcher and philosopher Glenn A. Albrecht, Solastagia is a term based on the words solace (that which gives comfort) and algos (Greek for pain). It refers both to a sense of loss caused by environmental changes as well as to the feeling of homesickness while still in place. Whilst solastalgia has been felt across many cultures for centuries, modern climate chaos has intensified the phenomenon.”

“Comprising a black-and-white series of unique silver gelatin prints, my project reflects on psychoterratic states as an abstract, geographical category where feelings of slow disappearance are revealed. Borderless edges, flowing lines and seemingly recognisable images come to the fore – just as a distant satellite captures the contours of a targeted area, only as sharply as its magnifying capabilities allow.”
