Riina Varol (EE, b. 1979) is an Estonian artist and photographer who concentrates her creative approach on issues of sensorial perception, the functions of the unconscious, animism and eastern philosophy. Her work spans a range of media including site-specific multimedia installations, photography, video, sound, tactility and smell. Varol has studied photography at both the Pallas University of Applied Science in Tartu and the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. A member of the Estonian Artists’ Association and the Tartu Artists Union, Varol has participated in exhibitions in Estonia, Finland, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Lithuania, Ukraine and Australia.
Voyage takes shape in a series of mixed media photo collages, inviting sensorial experience and physical touch through different textures and abstract forms. The properties of different surfaces and environments are visible and imaginable, but out of reach. These works stimulate auditory, olfactory and tactile sensations, reflecting the formation of personal memories. The elongated circle depicted throughout the series establishes a connection between different dimensions, mirroring both the human pursuit of perfection and our distance from it.
