Sarah van Rij

Sarah van Rij (FR/NL, b. 1990) is a Dutch photographer, based between Amsterdam and Paris. Working intuitively, she documents fleeting fragments of life on the street, capturing the beauty in the everyday. Characterised by careful framing, experiments with perspective, touches of vivid colour and abstract traces of the human form, Van Rij’s work draws influence from various artistic fields, from painting to cinema. Whilst her images are inherently contemporary – shot largely on iPhone – it is difficult to place them in time: devoid of temporal indicators, her work takes on an ageless feeling, evoking nostalgia for times gone by.

At Foto Tallinn, van Rij presents her most personal project to date. In a departure from her typical still lifes and street scenes, she instead turns her lens inwards: a reflection of a year in which she has grappled with her mental health. Alongside her photographs, several collaged works combine ripped and disconnected pieces of her own image, mirroring the feeling of putting oneself back together after feeling lost.
