Triin Kerge

Triin Kerge (EE/IT, b. 1986) is an Estonian artist living between Tallinn and Venice. She holds a BA in Documentary Photography from Newport University, Wales, and an MA in Contemporary Art from the Estonian Academy of Arts. Kerge’s creative practice focuses on materiality, the nature of memory and the connections between collective and personal memory. The meaning of home is another recurring theme throughout her work; in recent years, her research has focused on her family history.

Scenes From a Lost Family Album explores notions of memory, loss and the passage of time. Inspired by the artist’s experience of losing her family albums, the project evokes a sense of nostalgia and longing for an elusive past.

Comprising a series of embroidered photographs of cherished memories captured in lost family albums, each stitch becomes a metaphorical bridge between the artist’s past and present, imbuing the images with a pronounced sense of intimacy.

Scenes From a Lost Family Album invites viewers to reflect on the universal experience of familial connection and the significance of preserving memories for future generations. At the same time, there is a palpable sense of estrangement – despite the familiarity of the scenes depicted – which highlights the artist’s unresolved quest to reclaim their own lost history. Throughout, Kerge engages with the complexities of identity and belonging, offering a meditation on the fragility of memory and the enduring power of nostalgia.
